The Process of Making an Antique Finished Sculpture.

• Burying the Statue: Dig a hole large enough to bury the statue. The depth can vary depending on its size and the desired effect. Place the statue in the hole and cover it with soil. Make sure the statue is fully covered and compacts the soil around it. Leave the statue buried for a period ranging from a few weeks to several months. The longer it stays buried, the more natural the aging effect will be. Over time, natural elements like moisture, earthworms, and other soil organisms will interact with the statue, enhancing its aged appearance.
• Painting and Finishing: Adding layers of paint and finishing to replicate the color and texture of aged materials.

5. The final touches involve refining the details and ensuring the sculpture closely resembles the vintage Buddha statue. This step may include additional painting, polishing, or adding decorations like gemstones.

Those holy places are mainly without any security, as the locals believe no one will dare to steal them, and there are many other reasons, such as the one who dares to steal them will suffer or get cursed. These local beliefs play a significant role in preserving these statues. But these thoughts don't affect them theft. They strive to steal and sell those precious old statues and monuments. Locals are also aware now and trying to protect them with locking systems and guarding the sites with armed security personnel. 

Efforts to Recover Lost Antique Statues

Many antique Buddha statues have been lost or taken from their original locations. Some were looted during wars, others stolen by thieves, and some simply misplaced. However, there is a growing movement to recover and return these lost treasures and old statues to their rightful places. Many organizations are raising their voices, and the youth actively participate in this cause. As a result, many museums and art galleries are also returning the arts to their rightful owner or place where the divine power belongs.

Lost Arts of Nepal is an organization that provides awareness to the youth of our stolen old statues & artifacts and encourages different museums to return them. They have also shown that many of those artifacts have been returned and are being returned. Many prominent museums and galleries are also taking a step to return the artifacts to their respective place.

Success Stories

Numerous successful recoveries of lost antique statues have occurred. In 2021 alone, museums and collectors worldwide repatriated more than a dozen Nepali antiques. The collection includes an 800-year-old Laxmi Narayan statue, a 13th-century carved temple eave, a 14th-century gold seated antique Buddha statue, a 15th-century Ganesh, and a 13th-century Chaturmukhi Shivalinga. In recent years, we've also gotten statues of Dipankara Buddha, Garudasan Buddha, Saraswati, and 20 idols recovered from a monastery in Dolpa," said Sarita Subedi, an archaeology officer with the Department of Archaeology. "Repatriation of lost artifacts has occurred from countries like Germany, Austria, and the United States."
