Guru Rinpoche is represented sitting in a royal posture, presenting confidence and spiritual mastery. His right hand holds a vajra, which represents indestructible power, while his left hand holds a skull cup (kapala) filled with the nectar of wisdom. The khatvanga, a trident ornamented with symbolic components reflecting his tantric attainment and the union of wisdom and compassion, rests on his left shoulder.

Guru Rinpoche, also known as Padmasambhava, is regarded as the "Second Buddha" and is hence highly esteemed in Tibetan Buddhism. Samye Monastery, the earliest Buddhist monastery in Tibet, is said to have been built because of his ability to pacify the local demons. In Tibet, Vajrayana (Tantric) Buddhism was brought by Guru Rinpoche and combined with the native Bon tradition. He is frequently shown in complex iconography signifying his spiritual mastery and protective abilities. His teachings and practices have had a long-lasting influence on Tibetan Buddhism.
