His Divine Right After the Tibetan exodus, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, the 16th Karmapa, was instrumental in ensuring the survival and worldwide dissemination of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. He oversaw the founding of several monasteries, centers, and institutes all over the world, but especially in the West, Asia, and India. Well-respected in the Himalayas for his wisdom, happiness, and compassion, he was sought after by many lineages of masters. One of his most important accomplishments was bringing the Shamarpas lineage back to life after 170 years by formally recognizing and installing his nephew, Mipham Chokyi Lodro, as Shamar Rinpoche with the approval of the 14th Dalai Lama. Recognized as the 16th Karmapa's reincarnation, Thaye Dorje, the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, carries on his tradition.
