Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, the 16th Karmapa (1924-1981), was a key figure in Tibetan Buddhism and the head of the Karma Kagyu lineage. He departed Tibet in 1959 and created Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim as his new headquarters, reviving the Karma Kagyu tradition during a trying time. He was instrumental in popularizing Tibetan Buddhism worldwide and revitalizing the Shamarpa tradition. His wisdom and compassion live on via his reincarnation, Thaye Dorje, the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa.
