The sculpture represents Buddha with his right hand resting on his knee and his fingers touching the earth, representing the Earth-touching mudra. His left-hand rests comfortably on his lap, holding an alms bowl. This pose represents enlightenment, anchoring, and the Buddha's connection with the earth and his disciples.

After nearly six years of study, self-deprivation, and severe concentration, he achieved his aim. He had attained enlightenment (a Buddha). He claimed to have then proceeded to a deer park in Sarnath (Benares), India, on the outskirts of Varanasi.
